Land Rover Discovery - fifth generation of the model (L462) submitted in September 2016 at the Paris Motor Show. The SUV is built on the same platform as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, and its design echoes that of the Range Rover Evoque. Available in five-seat and seven-seat (third-row seats optional) configurations. Competitors: Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE And Volvo XC90.
Production model design based on concept Discovery Vision which came out two years earlier. With the change of generations, Discovery received an 85% aluminum monocoque instead of a steel integral frame. The extensive use of "winged metal" has reduced the curb weight by as much as 480 kg, so that the lightest modification of the new generation model weighs 2099 kg. The overall length, width and height of the SUV were 4970 (+141 mm to its predecessor), 2073 and 1846 (-41 mm), respectively. The wheelbase has been increased by 38 mm to 2923 mm. The drag coefficient is 0.33 - 0.36 depending on the modification. Fully LED lighting is available for an extra charge.
The car is available in S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury trim levels, with a range of original features and options available for each level. For example, for HSE and HSE Luxury trim levels with an optional third row of seats, you can order electrically adjustable rear seat backrests. There are different combinations of interior leather colors and materials of decorative elements, including aluminum and different types of wood. Also, top-end equipment can be equipped with a panoramic fixed or sliding roof, two- or three-zone climate control and other equipment.
The fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery engine range consists of 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter petrol units and a 3.0-liter "diesel" engine (a 2.0-liter diesel engine is also available in some markets). All of them are combined with 8-speed ZF automatic transmissions with paddle shifters and Transmission Idle Control. The control electronics reduce engine power by 70% at idle when the vehicle is stationary in Drive mode, reducing fuel consumption in urban environments. When the temperature is low, the transmission shifts to a lower gear so that the engine warms up to operating temperature faster.

The new Land Rover Discovery is equipped with permanent all-wheel drive. On S trim, Si4 Ingenium and Td6 engines, a single-stage transfer case is fitted as standard. Electronics recognizes wheel slip and redistributes torque between the axles to improve traction. Typically, the “moment” is distributed in a ratio of 42 to 58, that is, 42% to the front and 58% to the rear. The center differential senses wheel slip on one axle and redistributes torque to increase traction on the other axle.
On vehicles with Si6 engines and optionally with a Td6 engine, a two-stage transfer case is installed. an electronic center differential provides a 50:50 torque distribution between the axles and a preventive lock to prevent wheel slip.
In addition, the Discovery can be equipped with an electronically controlled active locking rear differential. Such a system can be useful when driving on low-traction surfaces such as wet grass, as the vehicle controls slippage and redistributes torque between the front and rear axles and between the rear axle wheels, thus making difficult passages easier.
Standard equipment on the Discovery S trim with Td6 and Si4 Ingenium engine is double wishbone independent spring suspension at the front and multi-link at the rear. The ground clearance of such vehicles is 220 mm. Optional air suspension is offered for all four wheels with the function of height adjustment when landing. In the maximum position, the clearance reaches a value of 283 mm.

Land Rover Discovery also received a Terrain Response system for adapting to road conditions. It allows the driver to optimize engine, transmission, center differential and chassis settings for comfortable driving in various road conditions by selecting one of the driving modes. It also activates the Rock/Slow mode if the vehicle is equipped with electronically controlled air suspension and a two-stage transfer case. An optional Terrain Response 2 system is installed. It monitors road conditions and automatically changes the driving mode, thus adapting the settings of the chassis and powertrain.
Another highlight of Discovery is cruise control at low speeds when driving on various types of surface (ATPC). This optional system works like conventional cruise control, but for driving at low speeds (between 2 and 30 km/h) in difficult terrain. When ATPC is enabled, the desired speed can be selected using the standard +/– buttons on the steering wheel used to operate the cruise control system. By pressing the brake and accelerator pedals, you can change the set speed, gradually accelerating or braking.
